ANTHROPOLOGY OF GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE

Gender-Based Violence affects almost all cultures in obvious and insidious ways. Cultural patterns of masculinity and femininity, and cultural prescriptions of gender roles play a powerful role in shaping structural inequalities. This course examined the intersection of culture, gender, and violence around the world. We analyzed various forms of Gender-Based Violence – such as domestic violence, rape, intimate partner violence, dowry, female genital circumcision, and structural inequalities – through an anthropological lens, while exploring the role of culture in perpetuating gendered violence. In reviewing institutions and practices that contribute to GBV globally, we also closely examined local and international interventions that have attempted to address these issues.
